Hayden, Robert. Angle of Ascent: New and Selected Poems. New York: Liveright, 1975, first printing. Black cloth with gilt spine titles and dust jacket. The hardcover has light sun fading on the top and bottom edges and a small ink drip on the fore edge. The dust jacket has sun fading on the spine, chipping at the head and tail of the spine panel, and a few small scratches and edge tears. Inscribed and signed by Hayden on the half-title page: “For Emily / with high regard - / Bob.” Also included is a program titled “A Tribute to Robert Hayden,” an event that was held on February 24, 1980, at the University of Michigan where Hayden taught. The event included a reading by Hayden, as well as presentations by novelist Gayl Jones, poet Michael Harper, vocalist Oral Moses, a proclamation from the mayor of Ann Arbor, etc. Also included is a rather somber note from the Office of the Chairman on University of Michigan/Department of English Language and Literature letterhead stating simply “We are sorry to inform you that Professor Robert Hayden died last evening, Monday, February 25 [the day following his tribute]. Memorial details are as yet not known.” Hayden, a Detroit native, was a highly regarded poet who won the Hopwood Award twice, the Grand Prize for Poetry at the First World Festival of Negro Arts in Dakar (1966), and the Russell Loines Award from the National Institute of Arts and Letters.
