Support the MPLA in Angola Original Poster - San Francisco Poster Brigade, People's Movement for the Liberation of Angola

San Francisco: Wilfred Owen Brigade, 1975. Original Print. Very Good +. Wilfred Owen Brigade; Rachael Romero. Support the MPLA in Angola Original Poster. San Francisco: Wilfred Owen Brigade, 1975. Linocut, black ink on heavy white paper, image measures approx. 13 by 22 1/2-inches, the paper measures 17 1/2 by 23-inches, light red stamp of the “Wilfred Owen Brigade” in the lower right margin. Pin holes at each corner of the print and one at center top. Creases on upper right corner and an old repaired tear and tiny nick on left edge (none affect image). A remarkably well-preserved copy of this truly scarce graphic. This block-print was created by Rachael Romero in 1975, the same year she co-founded the San Francisco Poster Brigade. The SFPG was originally called the Wilfred Owen Brigade after the poet who was killed in action during the First World War, but, as Romero says, “no-one knew who Wilfred Owen was so soon changed the name to San Francisco Poster Brigade.” The SFPB existed from 1975 – 1982, though Romero remains an active artist engaged in social issues. The MPLA – the leftist People's Movement for the Liberation of Angola – Labour Party – has ruled Angola since the country’s independence from Portugal in 1975. During 1975, when this posted was created, the United States was heavily involved in supporting the MPLA’s opposition during the Angolan Civil War, which lasted until 2002. (sl)
